Course #: CES 4010

Description: Natural Clay Plaster for Sustainable Interior Environments presented by American Clay and the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Series. This course provides an understanding of the sustainability, composition, innovative environmental design and health promoting qualities of modern natural clay plaster for interior finishes. The impact clay plasters have on relative humidity, indoor air quality, mold prevention, and asthma mitigation is discussed. Environmental health, embodied energy of materials and sustainability impact are integral to the course, as well as a discussion of biophilic design and the impact of beauty and fractal patterns for the health of the nervous system. Finally, participants will learn details of installation, specification and available LEED credits of natural clay plasters.

Learning Objectives:  At the end of this course, participants will have become knowledgeable in the following six Learning Objectives:

1)       Understand the history and contemporary benefits of using wholly natural modern interior clay plasters.

2)       Demonstrate the inherent beneficial health promoting qualities of modern clay plasters, especially as related to humidity buffering and relative humidity.

3)       Understand the sustainable aspects of the materials, and the improved energy savings afforded by natural clay plasters.

4)       Understand the improved indoor air quality provided by the materials, and the increased well being of a building's occupants.

5)       Be able to identify the 8-10 potential LEED credits available through specification of natural clay plaster.

6)       Know the appropriate specification, application and installation aspects to provide the building's occupants with the maximum health and welfare.
